When they grew tobacco

When they grew tobacco

When my mama’s people grew tobacco my dad took off work to help them pull
A mule pulled the sled that we laid the sticky leaves on
He was one of us and we were one in the task
His eyes sparkled in the sunshine
And everything about the mule made me happy
especially the way my uncle could speak to him and make him stop and go

The mule was the first to go
Then my uncle 2009
Then my dad took off 2010
And I have a number
But for now I pass by that field most everyday
And if I forget who I am
I follow my minds eye
To the mule’s eye
And I know again
